Got out early this morning to hit a very old farm field. This is a great field that has produced a ton of awesome finds for me earlier this year, including a 1789 1/2 Reales. I was digging buttons for a few hours and finally got a high tone. I dug it live, so it was cool it turned out to be a seated half. I think I can read 1850, but not 100% certain. I don't see the "In God We Trust" banner above the eagle on the back, so that would make it from 1838-1855.

Someone on my Facebook page said it might be counterfeit, another said he just thought it looked like it was in a a fire. I would appreciate what your opinions are. It rings up just like the test bed seated 1/2 I have. The stuff on the coin is very hard and I'm pretty sure it's a metal of some kind. I'm almost positive the coin is silver, but not sure if I want to clean it.

Also, one of the buttons was really cool. I googled it, but no luck so far. Anyone know what it was from?

What an amazing find weather its counterfeit or if its real. I bet it's real though and was in a fire. If it rang up high my guess its real.

It definitely looks like an authentic Seated half that was in a fire. I found a seated dime that looked very similar one time. Still a cool find!

I love that old military button too!

Very cool find, real or not. As for the button, guessing New Jersey National Guard.

Thanks Digger! I thought that was an NC not an NG. Using your info, I checked and you were spot on, thanks!!

Welcome to the seated half club! I guess we are going to have to create a "scorched coin" division to go along with Tony Bell Two's counterfeit coin division! Thanks for sharing and HH, Dave.

Man that's one crispy silver. Definitely must have been in a fire. Button dates to after the CW & before WWI, nice find!
