Got out this morning before the heat and work, and had a mix of interesting finds. First target of the day rang way up in the upper right of the E-Trac where they say the silver dollars live (which in my experience is where copper pipe fittings live ), but I dig 'em anyway, and this one turned out to be a Washington medal, about 8-9 inches deep. Ground was rock hard, and I almost gave up on it. It looks like they made these around the time of the Civil War. I found a web site below that has info on these, but I can't find an example that matches my obverse and reverse. The scan of the obverse is lame as the bust sticks out too far, but it is not in good enough shape to read the writing. Perhaps olive oil will help. The reverse says TIME INCREASES HIS FAME. (And the scratch/scuff was already there, I was very careful with it).

Also pulled a rosie and a Barber quarter :happydance01:, and a quite abused halfpenny/colonial copper of some sort. The obverse is just a blob that was probably a bust at one point; the reverse sort of looks like the seated Britannica thing. Our soil here just abuses old coppers :bangahead01: :bangahead01:.

The other thing looks to be a piece of an old copper . It was deep, and it sounded good. I was thinking seated dime all the way as I worked thru the rock hard dirt. Can I at least count it as 1/4 of a large copper

Total hunt time, 3 hrs.

It seems you may have a reproduction of that original medal. From the little that I have gathered, some have been struck around the Civil War, all the way through the 1950's. Here are two sites that I think have your variety. Still a nice find but not as old as it may appear.

I haven't tried to clean it yet. Haven't decided between peroxide and olive oil. And George, thanks for the links on the repo. You are most likely right.

Sweet digs. That Barber quarter would make my day, week, and month! Congrats!
