It is my 1st year in detecting and I had started in my own 3 acre lawn. The home was built in 1960 so I did not expect any eye opening finds. Most of the finds I have made were just fairly modern coins and 1 gold ring.
I decided to detect away from the house near the road and hit an area with lots of iron flat nails and what looked like ashes in some of the holes.
I nearly gave up due to all the iron until I was getting a 99 blip between all the iron. Yep 10” down a 1934 Mercury was hiding. So don’t let iron run you away look for a good ping to jump out.
I was ran off by rain but will return soon as it dries up a little.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180212/88db821db1834e0c600d42689eb269e3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180212/d8d06f1a26051bf219d71e6752660108.jpg

Hey, your persistence paid off with an old Mercury dime! It's always a thrill to see that silver in the dirt. It seems like there may have been an old house or structure near the road. I bet there are more old coins and relics there.

:congrats:

Nice to meet you, geoclean!! So glad you found us! If by flat nails you mean square nails then you might have a winning site there! Mercs at 10in doesn't warm the cockles ... but that may mean you find large cents at 2in!! I don't disc out anything as I want to follow the iron. What detector do you have?? Congrats!!

Congrats on the silver! As was said, square nails are a great sign of an older site. Keep looking, there's got to be some more keepers in there!

It is an AT Pro I used the silence mode on the iron but with so much it was very active so I had to watch the numbers after I hear the higher pitch chirp.

After speaking with an older gentleman down the road it appears there was a very old home built in the 1800s and burnt down in the 1941.
I will be returning to the spot to see what I can find.

Great find amongst the iron. I'm in agreement, more to be found on your site.
