Actually been doing some hunting on EBay since the ground is still frozen and I'm currently working almost 90 hours a week. So I decided to pick up some sample coins for testing my machines with as well as collection value. Of course I made sure to only get the ones far below actual value which in itself is quite the challenge. I was going to wait on posting until I had the full set, but I'll post those as I obtain them. I won $3 gold piece today so should show up by the end of the week.
Here's my 1853 uncirculated $1 coin

Here's a couple I bet few folks have ever heard of. They are privately minted fractional gold coins from the California gold rush. The US didn't have nearly enough smaller coins in circulation at the time to meet the need during the gold rush, so they used the easily available local gold to make coins for breaking larger denominations. These are 2 examples of 25 cent gold coins. The first photo is next to a penny for size reference.
I'm still working on a 50 cent piece to round out the set.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180227/a1248bffbb99d62c7db041c0b9bf30c0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180227/ff760cf0afe0915daff6c8ed86ed3577.jpg

Thanks Al! Once I have them all together , including the $3 and 50 cent gold piece I'm Hoping to shoot a video for youtube getting readings on them. Maybe it will help some folks recognize a gold coin if they get their coil over one.

Jeepers, how many hours are in a week? :) I'm glad you're finding time to surf the net, finding gold! We had 50s temps today :shocked03: ground is soft!

I'm sure people would greatly appreciate such a video.

My thoughts exactly. I've looked, and the only gold coin tests I found were using European or Russian coins.

Great coins! I have a fractional gold piece that my Grandfather gave me about 50 years ago.
