I am still excited about what I found yesterday during my lunch break. As most of you know I often go detecting during my lunch at one of about 4 or 5 nearby parks. I have made many great finds over the years but yesterday I found a dream coin. It is not #1 on my list (gold coin) but its way up there.

I visited a park that dates back to the 1920's and meandered into the woods where last Fall I found some old coins including a nickel trifecta. I had gridded the "trifecta" area as best as I could with the Etrac back then so I was pleasantly surprised to be coming across nickel signals with the Equinox. They all ended up being beaver tails though. I came across a 33 signal but it was smearing and seemed it might likely be iron but it hit both ways most of the time. I was not able to get me coil all the way to the surface because a fallen tree though so maybe that was why the signal was off? I decided that there was no way I was passing up a 33 signal and dug a big plug and then scooped out more dirt and piled it off to the side. I then probed the hole and no response, then probed the pile with no response. So I took the detector and swept of the hole with no response and when I went over the pile I got a solid 24-25 signal. I looked down and on the very back edge of my pile I saw it! I knew it was silver but not sure what. I picked it up and noticed it was super thin. An instant later and I "real"ized what I had just found...my first Spanish Silver! A 1 Real from 1791 with a Bolivia mint mark.

It is a bit worn but I can see enough of the date that I am pretty sure its 1791. My first dated coin from the 1700's.

I was in such shock when I found it that I immediately grabbed up my stuff and ran to my car. I did not even fix the hole! I threw some of my gear on top of the car, opened up the trunk and threw stuff in there, drove off back to work and just happened to hear and see my headphones flying off of my car into the grass as I took off out of the park.

Would I have found it with the Etrac? Maybe? I know I gridded the area fairly well last Fall. My gut tells me yes I would have if I swung over it just right. I plan to go back today and fix that plug and see if I can move the rotting log and make sure there is not more.

Below is what I found last Saturday with ScottyB. It was a good day for me...1934 Buff, marble, 1943 Canadian Q, and an 1887 Indian.

Impressive silver coin. I'm buying equinox (but must sell my deus first)

That is what I did and I was fortunate enough to sell my deus for just a bit more than the cost of the EQ800. The deus is a very good machine if you can understand it...I could not so for me it was the right move.
