I got out at the crack of dawn today to hit a torn up lot in an old section of town. Pulled the coin below. I was suspicious from the second I dug it based on how it rang up. Cleaning it up a little confirmed those suspicions. Any idea what the story might be with this? It's clearly fake but could it be a very old fake?

I guess they're pretty common. Here is a club devoted to counterfeit capped bust half dollars- http://www.cccbhcc.com/New_About_Us.html
I found one a few years ago- http://www.americandetectorist.com/forum/album.php?albumid=81&attachmentid=53021
Yours is much better though. Still an old coin, now with a back story too! :congrats:

If that is an old fake then that is really rare find. Although I agree with you that's it's a bit heart breaking to be so close to the real thing.

I've heard that contemporary counterfeit coins can be worth more than the real thing sometimes. Great find!

Yeah, that's a heartbreaker. Kind of a bummer. It's still a cool old find! And if its really worth more than the real thing then ... :happydance01: :bananadance:
Congrats!
With a fake laying around, there might be a real one not too far away? Although someone might have caught onto it being a fake, and pitched it into the street. We'll never know.

From the picture the quality of the detail is stunning, the silver ( if it is silver?) appears to be heavier coated than I would expect from a modern replica. How are the dimensions? It looks like a quality forgery, makes you wonder if the person that lost it knew it wasnt real hmmm still a nice find, I enjoy the odd WTF item from time to time:)

What a great find! Very cool. Real or not, that's one for the display case.

While it would be nice to find an authentic Capped Bust Half Dollar, this counterfeit is a very interesting piece of history in its own right. One wonders how many times it was passed off as the real deal. Before the plating started flaking off it would have been very convincing. I agree that the silver plating appears to be thicker than on other examples.

I think it's a wonderful find!

That is a great find. Counterfeit or not, there is a piece of history there for sure.
