Hi all! Got out with Joe and Dan yesterday and faced the heat head on at some of our permission fields. The finds were slow, but steady enough to keep us going from 930-430 pm but needed about a gallon of beverages each and plenty of sunscreen to boot. I was fortunate to unearth a few very nice finds including my first 2 Reale (1779 Charles III) and an interesting counterstamped 1798 Draped Bust LC with a rotated reverse die state (Style 1 hair, reverse of 1797 variety). The only hits I found online for a J.D.M. counterstamp was for the John David Morgan steamship which ran out of Savannah, though alas the examples I found had the initials and an imprint of the actual steamer so I'm not really sure if that's the correct attribution or not. Other relics included the standard flat buttons, 2 reins guides, buggy brake, late 19th century finial, two partial conestoga bells and a hub cap from a Willy's Overland car (likely 1920s/30s). I'm not sure about the item at bottom center - heavy lead - perhaps some sort of handle. Thanks for looking.

John , that is a great day of detecting :perfect10: I love the counter stamped penny :smitten: I would agree the stamp ( actually carved into the metal ) is probably from a business but could also be from a silversmith , the letters "J" and "I" were often interchangeable back in them days too. Congrats again .

Both very nice coins! 1700’s spanish silver and 1700’s american coinage, I would call that a successful hunt indeed

Those are two amazing coins, John! :loveit:

The bigger Spanish silver coins like a 2 Reales don't turn up very often. That is a wonderful find!

But I am drawn to that counterstamped 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent! Now that is a piece of history! How lucky that the date is clear on it too. Amazing find! :notworthy:

:congrats:
