Happy 4th!
It's rare to dig complete shoe buckles. So happy with this one...ornate! Looks like the owner had previous problems keeping it in one piece. The other relics are from another site.
Thanks!

That is a great shoe buckle and to find it whole is awesome!!!! Have a question since I just found one of these myself. What is the item that is on the right side under the key? Found one just like it but a bit bigger and is copper. Mine only has 1 loop though.

The home owner was telling me it's to connect horse belts, Darryl. That's all he said. I find them from time to time. They seem to come in bunches. This is the 3rd one from this site, where a barn used to be. They key is from a Ford
Thanks!

Thanks, Noah! The owner of the relic house where I found the ox knobs was also telling me his dad had oxen...so they must have been around up until WW2.
I feel super fortunate to live where I do. Thanks!!

Nice looking shoe buckle, Drew! What do you think the frame is made out of?

Thank you, Don, Dave, and Tony...Yeah, I've seen that buckle site, Dave, it's funny, the items there are so old... buckles like the one I found just make it into the site... a European site for sure.
I'd guess cast copper, Tony? Maybe someone knows and will elaborate.

Nice one Drew. I've found complete copper shoe buckles and complete iron shoe buckles but never a complete combo. I am guessing Dan likely has a couple dozen complete specimens though. ;)

Considering how different the population density of Europe and the American Colonies was in the 18th century then it is really remarkable to find something like this. :thumbsup02:The buckle should be made of a castable copper / tin or copper / zinc alloy. What is the round object?

Greetings Dave

Very nice shoe buckle Drew , congrats !

these are usually a copper-alloy as this looks from its coloration , but can be made of pewter , tombac , steel and even silver or gold

Yeah Jeff, not many iron inner parts survive. I have a bunch of copper frames, and copper inners...I gave two wonderful complete copper ones to the hysterical society. I have some with an iron pin which freezes the workings. I saw "you-know-who" dig a complete silver buckle once. :shocked04:
I might have a silver frame, but I'd have to test it.

I don't know what that gear object is, Dave, maybe a watch part? Someday I want to cross the pond and do some real hunting!

Thanks, Dan...hey, they could work with steel back in those days?

they could Drew , although it was really a poured cast iron and why most rusts away fairly quickly but some higher carbon grades can last .

Thanks Drew (a month later, sorry). I take it the shoe buckle is iron on the inside and brass outer ring? That is beautiful and to find it whole. Wow. I have to comment twice on this one....
