First hunt of the year and I broke my rule, I went out with temps below 40. You people shamed me into it...and I'm glad!!! Under about 7in of snow/dirt I dug a Chicken hawk!!!! I looks exactly like the one I found a few years back. It also has a sweet shank! This one was in another town, miles away from GW's parade route.
Only 90 min hunt and I also dug a musket, tombac, and a completely wiped copper. :happydance01:
Thanks!
PS I don't know if it will be better or worse if I get that crud off, any advice would be helpful!

Congrats on your GW! I'd leave it as is, I believe that crust is heavily embedded and you would lose a lot of the detail.
That's a great photo of it.

Damn Drew, talk about hitting it outta the park this early in the season! That's a beautiful find, congratulations!

As far as cleaning if it were mine, I'd clean it very carefully. It's been in the ground for a long time, so I guess a warm water soak won't hurt.

Well done Drew!! Great find! I haven't found enough chicken hawks (0) to offer cleaning advice that you should listen to. But......I would preserve it as is, dirt and all if it was mine.

Funny, I have just the opposite rule. I hate to go metal detecting when it gets warmer than 40 degrees. ;)

Thanks George, Roger, and Jeff! I'm going to take your advice and leave it alone. Here it is with its new partner!

Certainly do Drew. I recall HMN having a stack of chicken hawks about the size of Dan's stack of Fugios.

I watched all the re-runs as well as a kid & still do from time to time. Mel Blanc must have been an awesome Dad/Grandfather to do all those impressions.

Are you doing something to make the crust come off, Drew, or is it flaking off on its own? It's looks like the details are going to remain sharp under the crust! That's awesome!

Thanks, Tony! I'm not doing anything but gently picking it up every other day or so.

Tony most of the copper and brass items that are this old usually can take a week to really dry out and as the moisture is drawn out the compacted dirt will loosen and flake off . this would be the least invasive cleaning to do first , then you can see the metal's surface and form a plan on what next is again least invasive to do to clean it .

Great start Drew and congrats! Thanks, Darryl! I think that button jinxed me, though. I've been out for 90min a day for 2 weeks, found NOTHING!! Any tips on breaking a curse? I can't wait 86 years.
