A few finds from yesterday - Coppers 1 and 2 of the year

Hi all,

Well, the snow's all melted, at least in the valleys up here so I headed out to northeastern VT (CT River Valley) for a permission hunt with my good friends at Green Mountain Diggers - my first outing of the year - been too long. We hit a few hay fields around two old cellar holes and were not disappointed, pulling 4 coppers, a Fatty Indian and some relics. My take was the '02 Draped Bust, a no date, very worn Liberty Cap and the Fatty. I also got the coil over a nice, likely Victorian Era ladies broach or hair clip. I'm still in the process of cleaning up the Liberty Cap. While the coin has a nice chocolate patina on it, the obverse has some verdigris atop it, so I've shown the reverse here in the group shot. Super start! Are you sore? I know there was some frozen areas around here a few days ago. Those Liberty caps don't come everyday. Keep it up!

Congrats on the finds. Those are 2 types of coppers that I have not found yet...maybe one day.

I wish I could find coppers or even large cents but they are rarer than hen's teeth around here. I also like the buttons.

Many factors can add to this but I fear you live too far south as I theorize that we in Northern states find so many due to the abundance of snow fall , almost a third of the year we have snow on the ground and coins are very silent when they drop into the white stuff and can often tarnish enough before spring to see them well when it melts .

Great way to start out the year! And I agree with fyrffytr1 about finding the big coppers. LCs and even fatties are extremely rare finds in my area. If one can believe it, I've actually found more CW tokens than LC's.

Oh, I'm sure there may be a few in your future Jared, but you may have to head east to improve your chances. Maybe there's one lurking up in your War of 1812 button site?

Maybe head east a bit? I see you're in SW Georgia, correct? I'm originally from SC (Camden area), and even there you have to go to the coastal plain (Low Country) to really get on the old coppers.

I was born and raised in western Maryland and have a few large cents from that area. But, I have been here in southwest "Jawja" since 1971.
