Yesterday I visited a fairgrounds that dates back to the 1880's. I was just glad to get out detecting in the nice weather.

I came across a nickel signal that turned out to be a Jefferson at about 5 inches deep. I then reswept the hole and got a high tone in the corner of the hole and a bit deeper. It was not a perfect tone but I dug it anyway. Out came an old quarter along with a nail. Boy was I happy to find a nice old silver to start out 2024!

Wow, what a find! 170 years old! I bet those rust stains will come off if you're so inclined.

It had to be a coincidence that that 1993 nickel was right by it!

:congrats:

Yes pure coincidence. The quarter was a couple inches deeper but the area I was in used to be a race trace and it was all turned over / bulldozed many years ago.

I think I’ll leave the stain as is for now.

Thanks everyone! My oldest US silver is an 1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. I have been very fortunate with old US silvers…1821 dime, 1830 & 1832 half dimes, 1839 dime, 1840 quarter and then 7 silvers from the 1850s.

Great find and good start to the new year. I just got back to Wisconsin and found that the ground in my area was completely thawed (now completely covered in SNOW) Congrats WD

Great find Jared! You know, of all the old 1700s/1800s coins I've found over the years, the Seated-Q still eludes me. It's my white whale. What can I say. Keep up the solid digging!
