I did a walk-through in a field where a town used to be located. I was hoping to spot a coin on the surface, but most of what I saw was just glass and crockery. I did find 2 small buttons. They are both about the same size (dime size), and almost pure white. First I thought plastic, but plastic didn't exist when this town did. Closer inspection looks like they are made from white marble or something similar. Has anyone ever seen anything like these before?

Mother-of-Pearl is a common button find around these parts. But as they said, if it's probably glass.

Oh wow, I never thought about it being porceline. That would make sense. I'm sure it's not mother of pearl, they are still shiny. MOP, like pearls would degrade somewhat after being the ground all these years.

So how common were porceline buttons?

I'd say real common. But, if it's not the standard 4 hole button, it still makes for an interesting button and would be more desireable.

If they were on the surface, J, I wouldn't imagine they'd be old at all. MHO.
