I was at a totlot searching for coins a few months ago, and was digging up more than my share of pulltabs that read just like a nickel on my Whites M6.
I must have dug 60 or 70 pulltabs--and got another nickel signal at the bottom of a slide in the totlot. I almost decided NOT to dig up another pulltab. Something told me to dig it up.

I moved the woodchips with my foot where the target was and saw something not aluminum pulltab colored. I reached down and moved more woodchips and saw some gold colored links of a chain. I very slowly pulled it from the chips---- it seemed to go on forever......I thought it was 6 feet long.( It wasn't but sure seemed like it) ;)
After I got it out, I sat on a nearby bench just looking at it--then putting it back in my pocket----pulled it out again to look at it--put it back in my pocket....I did that about 6 or 7 times. I couldn't believe I got a gold chain. It was stamped 14K Italy on the clasp and was 24 inchs long, and weighs 17.1 grams--worth over $425.00.

And to think I almost didn't dig it up--thinking it was just another pesky pulltab.
I brought it to 2 detector club meetings and 2 of the guys brought in their detectors to test it. It read exactly a nickel on both their detectors.

Don't want to dig pulltabs or nickels:huh:thinkingabout: You could miss one of these.........

Very nice find! :peace: :clapping: :peace: I use to get discouraged when I dug a pulltab so much I took the pulltab icon off my detectors. Now I have a school teacher that lives next to me and took interest in my detecting ventures, she notice that I have a lot pulltabs laying around and asked if she could have them for a cancer fund at her school. I said no problem you welcome to them all. Now it really makes me smile every pulltab I dig!

It can be frustrating at times after you have dug your share of pulltabs, but that one time you pass over one and decide to not recover it, :thinkingabout: you may leave a really great find for the next fellow. There are no 100% guarrentee's of what is in the ground when you get that signal, so dig it.

Howdy Pard!
Even those pulltabs, being aluminum, have value. I recycle aluminum cans and just fill one with pulltabs until I need another can. I visit the recycle center several times a month. Even aluminum pulltabs have value, and if you make a point of taking them, they'll add up and return a little extra money to your pocket. Think how many detectorists disregard how many pulltabs in a single year, and that number could translate into tens of thousands of dollars. I say, take 'em up and recycle the little boogers. Besides, it will clean that place so they ain't there next time you visit that location.

That chain is terrific. I see you've figured out that just a sweep of your foot can reveal something awesome. It is a good technique for getting the quick info on whether an item is good or junk. In this case, that swipe of the foot done you proud! Way too go!

I've been doing that for years. Most of the times the target is from 1 to 3 inches deep and moving the chips/gravel with your foot---you can spot the item ,and you don't have to bend down until you pick up the item.

Great find. I know that I've tested my detector with my wedding ring, among several others and they all read as a nickle. I would be willing to bet that its true of any gold item.

One of these day's :daydream: one of the manuf. out there will design a detector that will tell the difference from ringtops to pulltabs to gold rings.

You just gotta dig everthing. Just give in and :white:usaflag::

nickels come in at 18-20-22 on my M6 and the small 10k gold ring I found came in at a solid 2 on the M6 and the pulltabs seem to come in at 45-50 range,I think the soil has a lot to do with how different detectors will read the lower ranged items.

That looks just like the fake 14K italy chain i found. The clasp was broken the same way. Because the ring that held the lobster claw on was steel and rusted out. Mine tested as crap on the stone. The guy at the jewelry store said it was junk too!

Nice job. I once read a post that said the one thing he hated more than digging pull tabs, was missing gold. I would have to agree. Great post.

I also dig nickel signals. Have not found a ring yet but have found over 600 nickels so far since late last spring. I use a v3i and have set the tones (17-20) at 250 and the tones (21-24) to 248 These tones jump right out at you from among the lower tones of the junk

I really try to dig all signals. Coin spills can have a crazy VDI signal, depth, moisture content all play roles. The neat thing is in a "Hunted out park" if you are finding pull tabs you may well find gold.....dig them all....:)
