I know it is half of a two piece buckle, but nothing else. Any help would be great. Jeff

nice piece , any marking on the back  theres a few varieties of wreath tongue two piece buckles . any details on where it was found , how deep , ect.

heres a link to a company that makes nice reproductions from actual existing buckles , it might help in narrowing it down Jeff

Here is a few that I have pictures of. Maybe it will help. The CS ones look to have a rough look to the wreath but the u.s. one looks like yours in my opinion.

45935This the proper tongue for this wreath, there should be the number 33 stamped on the buckle. It is circa 1845-55 Navy Officer pattern, but is most often found in California gold camps. Great find!

Wow! Sweet find. Such intricate design for the period. A little jealousy here. Congrats.
