View Full Version : To tally or not to tally, that is the question

I don't include war nickels in my silver tally, but I've seen others that do. Since they're only 35% silver I would feel like I was cheating if I included them.

Silver is silver. Canadian silver coins aren't 100% silver, but I would definitely count those too :)

I tend to agree. I have always considered the wartime nickels as silver finds, even though I have never counted them in my silver totals. Perhaps I should have. :)

Why not? It would mean that I don't have to hustle anymore this year.

For me it would have to be more than 50% silver to count it. BTW, why'd you vote no then:huh:

Angel, I think you should stop counting dimes in your silver count. You'd still have me beat, but I'm going to give you a run for the money next year.

You might be right. I need to expand to other areas/states. ;)

Uh Oh, where do you live? I might need to move farther away from you. I think the silver coins are migrating towards you as if you were a giant black-hole for silver.

I'm one of the oddballs I guess but I don't keep a count, I just throw my finds in jars. One for silver One for clad. But the good silver go in my coin folder collections. thumbsup01

I'm pretty sure a war nickel has exaclty as much silver in it as a silver dime... as such, they count!

EDIT - apparently I'm way off here... less silver than a silver dime.

Still, I'm counting them. If I have to make up a reason it's because they usually come out of the ground shiny like silver. Or at least better looking than regular nickels.

I honestly have not counted this year either... Been a low silver year for me...aside from the Grandma's Horde... I'm sure I have been in the ~10 silver range... much less than last year. My silvers are put in protectors and the wheatis in a jar. I'll count them up this winter I guess while I'm going nuts with a frozen ground.

I don't keep a count on my silver for the year either (though I do know I am down this year from previous years), but I definitely consider the war nickels silver and would include them in a count..thats my 2 cents worth anyway (or 5 cents worth in this case I guess... )

I count them only cause it's easy  I don't get much silver where I hunt, but occasionally I will hit an old house and score some. I hit a park area last year and had great, (old) silver results, but not this year. I count large coppers instead ;)

I haven't been (and I voted as such), but I will from now on. Never gave it a thought... 'til now.

I guess I never have counted them just because of the low silver content of war nickels. It is hard for me to call it a 'SILVER' coin when 65% of the coin is made up of copper and manganese. So if a coin only had 10% silver content it would be considered a silver coin too?

They do have silver in them ,they are not that easy to find and they were created for use during WW2 so I consider them as counting for a silver find .

I count them too. Why not they do have 40% silver so why treat them like the b@stards of the coin world? :poke: You still have to find em and dig em up dont you?

Since I found my first one last week at a tot-lot and because it's my first (older) coin...I'm counting it! A 1944 Nickle is a war nickle right:huh:

Cheers,

Yep, it should have a big letter P, D, or S above the dome on the back side. Plus the color is a bit different than a regular nickel.

A second yes on what coinnut said. Check above the dome. Congrats on your first silver nickel. :peace:

Its simple really... do you count 10K gold ?? Its only 41.7% gold...14k is 58.5% gold... and 18K is 75%...

Gold is GOLD!
Silver is SILVER!

Might me easier to just tally your silver in grams *shrug*

Silver war nickle is worth $1.83 right now... Silver dime is $2.36...

But all of this is my humble opinion :-)
