I'm a market manager in a huge meat dept in South Carolina across the river from us. Spent right at 32 years in an Anhydrous Ammonia plant here in Ga. as the control board operator and decided I'd had enough of shift work a couple of years ago. I'm coming full circle I guess you can say. When I left from being a market manager @ $1.95 hour in the late 70's to make $2.35 hour in a chemical plant it was a big raise! Paid all the bills and had plenty left over.............I love what I'm doing now! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: thumbsup01My my how things have changed

We have always done a lot of different things over the years. We now have a commercial cleaning company, and we will be re-starting our wind chime / drummer's chime manufacturing business again. Just need that last major piece of machinery to get re-started. Anyone have a CNC vacuum, router table used in the sign making business, laying around their living room, they want to get rid of?? rofl I like being self employed. I can't take orders very well

I had been a Relationship Manager/Sales Director at a large insurance firm, and was with the company for 10 years, but the recent downturn in the economy resulted in a major layoff. Unfortunately, my position was one of the casualties. At this moment I'm in a transitional position - taking a short breather before joining the workforce once again.

And all the while I thought Angel was a professional Silver coin shooter!! I do hope the economy turns around for all of us though!!

After college I worked at a small research foundation studying lung cancer and cell signaling pathways. After 8 years of that and not wanting to get a Master's or Phd, and still make the same amount of money or less, I decided to try something I really enjoyed. Had the opportunity to work with a top notch carpenter and have been doing carpentry ever since. I am self-employed and lucky to have a spouse who makes the big bucks, otherwise I'm not sure if I could be doing what I'm doing now. I really enjoy the work but sometimes the dirt, the dust, getting paid, no paid vacation, no retirement, the physical toll day in day out, and the anxiety of getting the job done or getting new work makes me wonder how long... Might work with someone else down the road as all the regualtions, workmen's comp, insurances and liabilities don't quite seem worth getting any bigger and having employees.

One of the best things I have found about being a carpenter is that I get to metal detect the yards of some really old fancy places. I wish I had picked up this hobby before last year, really has been the best part of my job lately.

I do marine oil exploration for super huge oilfield services company. My actual title is Marine Data Acquisition Specialist.

I basically sit on a boat for half the year monitoring the incoming seismic data flow from the ocean and making sure it can be used for further analysis for geologists to best guess where the oil is.

I started out as a journeyman power lineman but when the legs couldn't handle the climb anymore I went to industrial electrician. I have been with the same company now for 27 years and love it. Our maint. force is a little different than most as its not a union shop and we are required to fix everything. So although my main title is systems electrician I do machine repair, millwright work, welding, mobile equipment, machining and the list goes on. :shocked04:. IMHO being able to work on it all is not only fun, but it really gives you a broader knowledge base to work with.

I'm officially retired (26 years teaching broadcasting at Parkland College in Champaign, IL), but I still do a lot of substitute teaching at the college.

I also have a small but steady income from selling the books I've written.

Like many writers, I've had a long and varied career (before I began teaching): radio disc jockey, real estate broker, magazine writer, newspaper writer and photographer, wedding photographer, Air Force medic, theater projectionist, block-ticket sales for the Atlanta Braves. And a paper route as a kid, then working in the newspaper office on vacations from college.

WITH THE BATTERIES IN IT! I had to take it apart and clean it and also needed a new battery pack to get it working. They say they used it for locating water valves that got covered up. Last year I did use it to find a valve box in the rough that was covered over with grass. What would they do with out me

First off what a great thread. Now about me. I Have a degree in Geological Engineering which helps me see the lay of the land and moving beach erosion differently than others. Thought I was going to be an oilman and have a rich and fulfilling carrer until Oil collapsed in the late 80's. Somehow that turned into a career in Retail Development. Been developing and building shopping centers and drug stores across the eastern cost from Virginia to Florida for the last 25 years and loving every minuet of it. My job is to coordinate all the differnt contractors and consultants that go into developing a shopping center. What is really cool is when we by a property that has an old retail building or house on it that we are tearing down. When that happens it's just me and my XLT making sure their aren't any burried lines that might get dug up for safty reasons of cousre thumbsup01

I guess you could call me retired. I spent 37 years as a Public Safety Officer at Syracuse University. The first 21 years were as a dog trainer. We patroled the campus nights with the dogs. They were trained for crowd control, tracking, and attack. The rest of the time was regular patrol on days. Also spent 28 years with the 174th Air National Guards. Now my wife and I are the Animal Control Officers for our town. We also do large animal rescue for the county. At present we have 14 horses, 2 miniture donkeys, 20 something dogs, and at last count over 30 cats. On second thought, maby I'm semi retired.

Alwqays wanted to be an archeaologist, but life didn't take me that way. I love the history of what we find.

I finally retired a few years ago. Spent 38 years as a Public Safety Officer, and had 30 years in the 174th Air National Guard here in central New York. My wife and I are the animal control officers here in our town, and we also do large animal rescue for the county, mostly horses. At present we have 15 horses, 2 miniture donkeys, 18 dogs and many many cats. Oh well, so much for retirement, but still manage to get out and swing the detector once in a while. |:cheering:

I do not look at this section of the forum too often but this was a great thread to read.
Now I'll give everyone one guess what it is that I do. You are right I'm a full time Firefighter. It is a job that consist of more than just spraying water on fire. I'm a Emergancy Medical Technician and I currently hold the position of Heavy Equipement Operator which means I drive and operate every piece of Equipement we own but not at the same time, LOL. I'm also a Hazardous materials Technician and a Technical Rescue team member. Which consist of trench rescue water rescue and Deep tunnel rescue and just about any other bad situation someone could get them self into. I did a short stint as a fire inspector and I'm also an acting officer for my department. Oh yeah and I'm a certified Fire Instructor so I can teach all this stuff that I do. So you guys thought I just drive and spray water on fire LOL.
My future career goals are to retire in 5 years after 29 years of service and become a full time professional TREASURE HUNTER.

Beside my par-time job picking up change from the parks, I work for an IBM subcontractor. I Build these super computer cooling components and test them. I trying to get into IT. Got couple of certifications and getting ready for a big leap, but the uncertainty of the economy keep me from doing so. Live to Work, Work to Live.

Well, I am a year late on this thread but I like it.

I've been in sales since I was 5. Started at my fathers flower store at age 5 (continued this seasonally until 22). Moved onto selling candy in 5th grade, firecrackers in 7th, Kirby vacuums in high school & college. I was also a bartender, bouncer, sold hot dogs and beer on the beach and at Harvard University (too bad I didn't go there). I too was a casual at the post office in 1990 for 4 months and went into the business of insurance for a private firm. They went bankrupt, so I went to Mutual of Omaha in 1993. Left there in 1994 and did insurance on my own. Left that to sell cars (honda, where I met my wife),then internet service, websites, telephone service, outdoor advertising and finally back into the insurance business in 2001. Been there since and will never ever leave. Run my own shop and answer to NO ONE! I could not imagine having a boss at this point in my life. The $ is good and typically, I can carve out plenty of time for guess what? Hockey, MDing and poker!

I like to work with small business owners on their group health and life insurance for estate plans , keyperson and buyout coverage. I also market medicare products, long term care, disability and annuities. Although I am licensed to sell investments, I use a specialist to handle that for me.
