High Value Indian Heads

A friend I play pool with told me his son collects coins, and recently found a '47 or something(date might be off) indian head coin, and in casual conversation he said that his kid found the value to be $3500. Is this realistic? martin

It could be depending on how the coin ends up on the rating scale. The Indian was minted from 1859 to 1909, but I don't even begin to understand the rating system for coins, but take for example the year 1860, it can run from a low of just over 8 bucks to 8000 :shocked04:stretcher: . While glancing though the listing to answer your question I saw one indian that topped out at 30,000 dollars. Now remember you need someone that is willing to spend tha much for a coin for it to be worth that much. Phil

My father use to deal in coins a long time ago and to the best of my knowledge (I AM NO EXPERT), I do not believe that anything that has been in the ground for any length of time would make it far up the grading scale to be worth a lot of money. Scarcity or oddity would add more to the value for coins found in the ground than the condition. This would be especially true with copper coins. If I am wrong, someone please correct me.

An 1877 is worth quite a bit of money. It is the key date of the series

Most coins from the ground are fillers at best, at least in the New England soil lol But some coins can still get you some cash. The 1877, 1909 S, and the 1908 S are always gonna get you something on E Bay. Now Martin, you mention he found it. If it was undug, it could very well be an 1877 in really nice shape or even an 1888 8 over 7. Both those coins could reach the $3500.00 range, although the '77 would have to be mint state to do it. Most likely if they do not understand coins, they simply looked in a Redbook and decided it was in the best condition and therefore it is a $3500.00 coin lol

I asked the father again about the coin, and it appears that it was a buffalo nickel, not an indian head. The son did find it in general change at some gas station or something. I still don't know exactly what the year and mint was, but either 46 or 47, and I think a d mint. My memory and second tier gossip doesn't help.
Btw, In my defense, the Buffalo nickels were called Indian Heads, so my friend wasn't far off.

It is still a mystery though. My research after russel's reply, finds that the indian head 5c indian head piece wasn't made past '38. I suppose the kid may have found a 1937D 3 leg error. That's about the only valuable one close to the date. I'll reverify again next time I visit to be sure just what it was.

I found only one coin thats worth good amount of cash and that coin is 1856 FE. HH Mike
