got up early today to hit some colonial sites with Coinnut , he wanted to hit an old cellar that was really good to him years back . after a good jeep ride into the woods we could go no further so we hoofed it for another 1/4 to 1/2 mile we made it to a nice big colonial with lots of area.
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/gsite1.jpg

the once virgin site was pretty devoid of targets just a few small buttons was our reward after many hours. so we headed up the road and hit another large site .this is where i found this little fella
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/smallorangesalamander.jpg

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/gsite2.jpg

with again little results , so we drove to a nearby area that had about two more large colonials with large fields and George an i went to work . after a few more hours i headed down to the last cellar
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/pocketspillsite.jpg

and began to work a steep bank . half way up i got a great target ( the best of the day :smitten:) but it wasn't very deep , maybe on a the steep grade it doesn't have to be , i thought. at about 2 1/2 inches it was an aluminum can end :hairpulling: >:{ >:/ what the @$!% is this here for , the detecting gods were making sport of me lol rofl . i continued up the grade for two reasons , 1. most people don't do them and 2. i wanted to see the top as i have never been up there and wanted to hit the area above the cellar . i reached the top of the grade and worked a small area overlooking the cellar then i got a beautiful coin sounding target and a solid +88 - +89 on my dfx :shocked04:stretcher: . before i got to excited i pinpointed it and it pegged at 6 inches :shocked04:  :loveit: :smitten: and i'm thinking this could be a nice goodsized piece of silver . after i pull a 3 inch plug out i start to dig in the nice soft dirt with my hand after a little dirt i pull this out

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/3coppersinhand.jpg

just by their color i knew there could be more in the hole

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/6coppersinhand.jpg

6 coppers all stacked on top of each other :omg:  :shocked04: not just a copper spill but a real colonial copper spill they are a 1774 King George III (counterfiet) , 4 1787 fugio coppers ( sorry Angel i just had to beat your two in one day record ) and a 1788 New Jersey state copper (maris 67-v. variety common type).

oh yeah i did the dance :happydance01: happydance02 <:

heres all the goodies 5 buttons a shoe buckle frame and the coppers , their pretty green so it might be awhile before their cleaned first i have to id them , but i keep you all posted with more pictures of the progress.HH

You needed a good day and I'd say this one qualifies  Makes my finds look meager lol But I did manage to score 1 copper :dontknow: and I think it's a Louis the XVI, but can't seem to find the same reverse on Google. But I didn't look that hard either lol Got a wierd looking bell, a good amount of buttons and other stuff for the collection. It was a really good hunt today. Congrats on that spill. :perfect10: :perfect10: :perfect10:

Here's some of the junk (rest is in Dan's jeep 8/)

thanks you two , George that coin is in pretty decent shape. what would be the around date for Louis the xvi reign anyways.

i'm pretty sure the king george III is either a machin mills 1774 (vlack5-74a ) or a (vlack7-74a) the reverses are very close , George the coins are starting to clean up a little . some of the detail on a couple of the fugios is incredible :daydream: as soon as i get them presentable i'll post'em .

Wow, what a great find, wonder if they were lost in a pouch that they stayed together like that. Hope they clean up nicely.

The French copper appears to be a 1791 French 12 Denier, not 100% positive but sure is similar.

I know that I have had a hard time getting that thick verdigris off of my coppers. I can't really tell from your photo, but I'm guessing it may not be as bad, and the details will shine through. A huge congrats! :clapping:

Nice old French copper, George. :peace: I think it is the first one I have seen dug. :thinkingabout: By the way, you should have video recorded Dan's dance. lol

well heres a couple that are just about there cleaning-wise .... lol lol

when these coins were brought home they pretty much looked like this

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/coinspillfugiobeforecleaning1.jpg

covered with a very hard green verdigris thats very stubborn to separate from the coin.
the 1788 new jersey copper was on the outside of the spill as the front must have been down and the elements affected it more while the back was more protected by the next coin in the spill. its front side is very poreous , it is a common type for that year (Maris 67-v.) and probably the least in value

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/newjerseyfront1.jpg

the back is in great shape and just needs a little more elbow grease to clean up.

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/newjerseyreverse1.jpg

the nxt copper is a 1787 fugio that i'm still unsure about the variety , it does have a flawed plachet which wasn't to uncommon to use back then . the front has some great detail but you'll notice in the upper left area there was a lowspot or cull in the die when it was pressed.

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugiowithflawedplanchetobverse1.jpg

and heres the revers of the same coin

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugiowithflawedplanchetreverse1.jpg

the next coin i thought was just another King George III copper turned out to be a 1774 Machin Mills counterfiet (Vlack3-74A variety ) , it has some wear and is a little rough around the edges but i'm happy with the way it turned out .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/1774machinmillsfront1.jpg

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/1774machinmillsreverse1.jpg

and the last i have to show you so far is the front of this 1787 clubed ray fugio (Newman 4-E) variety . it also has some great detail and is cleaning up well.

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugioclubrayobverse1.jpg

thanks all for the kind words , i hope thers more to come .

I can't find that exact one in Breens book either. The closest it comes is Breens # 1310 They do state that there are 28 varieties of that one. It is the little A in the word ARE that makes me think it's that one. I don't have a plate showing all the 28 varieties though. They are all looking good :perfect10:

thanks everyone ,
heres a couple of pictures of the last two fugios the backs are still unfinished so i only have the fronts to show as they need just a little more attention to complete.

this one is only half i'ded its a (Newman 15-? front variety) because of its die crack in the lower right side just outside of the sundial base . the back of this coin was on the other outer side of the coinspill so it does have some pitting going on the reverse .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/newman9varietyfugiofront1.jpg

the last i'm pretty certain is a (Newman 9-? front variety) the back is starting to clean up well .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/unknownvarietyfugiofront1.jpg

soon i hope to post a few shots of them all together somewhat like were some 200+ years ago when they first got lost. thanks all for staying tuned through out this process.

heres a before shot of them all dirty and corroded

[size=1:crazy:t]updated information on the coins

first ,
again thanks everyone for the nice words and pm's , the questions and interests is great.

i have gotten some 4 confirmed i.d's on the 6 coins with these three more interesting than the other one which turned out to be a (Newman 15-Y ) .

the first is the 1774 King George III is in fact a confirmed ( Vlack 3-74A. ) a rare Machin Mills counterfiet copper estimated numbers of coins available are only 65 to 124 coins

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/1774machinmillsfront1.jpg
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/1774machinmillsreverse1.jpg

the next coin is a 1787 fugio thats confirmed as a (Newman 4-E ) known as a club ray variety with a rarity as scarce with only 250 - 499 coin available
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugioclubrayobverse1.jpg
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/clubedrayfugioback.jpg

which brings me to this Fugio , it was a good run around to id it but has been confirmed as a (Newman 13-N ) and is a very rare type with as few 17- 33 coins available and happens to be the best conditioned coin in the spill i found .
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugiowithflawedplanchetobverse1.jpg
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2011/fugiowithflawedplanchetreverse1.jpg

this coin is even missing out of some of the most prestigious coin collections and could be one of the best examples around . i do not know what a coin like this might fetch on an auction and i did find one example on ebay and it was rated as a g-5 condition , holed and with a counterstamp a pretty beat specimen and they still want $1,500 for it .
heres a link-

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1787-Fugio-copper-Newman-13-N-R7-129-GR-COUNTERSTAMP-/290605751067?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DS IC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%25 2BUFI%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D300462009242%26ps%3D63%26 clkid%3D2495949531078907546

just wanted to keep you all informed as some have been very interested in this from the get go.

Thanks again for looking .

I know, I know, I haven't been on here in awhile. Dan and I use to go all the time until I got Lyme Disease and had to pretty much give it up. It's been 5 years now since having the rash and unfortunately it caused irreversible and degenerative joint , muscle and nerve damage which causes me to be in pain all the time.
Anyway, I want to congratulate Dan and George on this hunt. If I had been there, I would have probably been shaking all the way home. Best hunt I've seen these two have. I hope to hook up for a little while with the Master(Dan) (CANE IN ONE HAND, DETECTOR IN THE OTHER) in the next few months before it gets too cold for me.
All coins have areas of great detail and I hope Dan found out the Variety of the Fugio. Too bad G's coin wasn't laying date side down. It seems that the side facing down comes out looking better. Anyway, I would be happy beyond belief. I'm getting itchy just typing this reply!! :white:usaflag::

got up early today to hit some colonial sites with Coinnut , he wanted to hit an old cellar that was really good to him years back . after a good jeep ride into the woods we could go no further so we hoofed it for another 1/4 to 1/2 mile we made it to a nice big colonial with lots of area.

just by their color i knew there could be more in the hole

6 coppers all stacked on top of each other :omg:  :shocked04: not just a copper spill but a real colonial copper spill they are a 1774 King George III (counterfiet) , 4 1787 fugio coppers ( sorry Angel i just had to beat your two in one day record ) and a 1788 New Jersey state copper (maris 67-v. variety common type).

oh yeah i did the dance :happydance01: happydance02 <:
