I found this at a construction site yesterday at an older school. It measures 28mm in diameter. Thanks to Ill Digger for making me take a second look at this one.

Judging by the design of the numbers, I'm thinking 1885 is the date. But then again we should wait for the experts to chime in. Nice recovery. Congrats

That's very cool- the oldest I've found is 1921. I was gonna take a pic and put it on here but got distracted looking for my old tags (I save them all) lol Here's a 1947 dog tag I found recently- see how the date is on the bottom and 1585 is the id #. I'm no expert, but I think yours is from 1885 :clapping:

I have been getting some exciting responses to my posts on this find from several forums and today I received an email from a collector who is one of the editors on a collectors guide for these dog tags. It is as follows:

This is the first Minneapolis dog tax tag dated 1885 reported! The oldest known is dated 1883 (only 1 reported) . . . . but then the next oldest known is 1886 (only 1 reported), the 1887 (4 reported) . . . . and the 1887 tags are an acorn shape.

Congrats... it looks like it is in uncirculated condition. lol
I have one dog tax tag from 1895. The date is below the tax number on mine too.
Very cool find!
