Friday---
with my kids back to school i can usually enjoy a few more hours of detecting , Keith a fellow club member (Y.T.C.) gave George and i an invite to hit an old area he has known about for a few years .this place is huge and although it has a couple of cellar sites on it was used more in the mid 1800's to about the 1940 for various other reasons . according to Keith its not well known by alot so i didn't want to take pictures to give the place away.

my finds here included some cool old tools

a brass rod leveler that has an 1885 patent date and a brass plumbob both targets sounded real sweet .

i also detected a cool old bottle (hutchinson type ) that still had the wired cork stopper inside , the embossing reads J.A. Cronkright 391 & 398 Seventh st. Jersey City

my coin finds were two indian and a v-nickle

one indian was toast and the other was a beautiful 1907

and then at the last minute i snagged this sterling item , any guesses as to what it is :huh: anyone :huh:

it does have some hallmarks and a name engraved one one side

Saturday---

saturdays are limited due to the continuing volunteer work at the pequot museum but George and i still get a few hours at our cellar site . i managed to find a fatty indian only to lose it inside of George's truck 8/ to which he has informed me that if he finds it he's putting it up on ebay lol lol and a couple of buttons and plenty of pewter spoons and parts . heres a picture of the two day total finds

my good find was a civil war era officer's Connecticut state seal coat button , these buttons are very thinly stamped copper fronts with an attached brass back and finding one thats not either in rough shape or not bent or pushed in is very difficult . this is my second one although the first is very roughly pitted and severely pushed in crying01 so i was very happy to see this one in very nice shape :happydance01: <:
here it is uncleaned and just from seeing this i could tell there was an awful lot of gilt hiding under all that dirt and crud

and just after a little soap and water cleaning with a toothbrush you could start to see it

but some water diluted in a little CLR and a toothbrush really cleans the stains left by the dirt and makes the gilt pop out

Wow Dan, that button is beautiful!!! :perfect10: Those are some great finds!!

Seems to me that I recall George losing some stuff in the past too lol

lol rofl rofl yes the G-man has just about lost everything at one time or another :yes: :yes:

but to his defence Angie he has found most of it all back , even his mind lol rofl

he did find some nice goodies a couple of silvers on friday and a couple of coppers on saturday , i know he working today but i'm sure he'll post'em later.

lol lol the plumbob was a no-brainer but the rod leveler was an odd find , i only knew it was surveying or building engineer related and it wasn't to hard to look up. the leveler is in amazing shape as the hinges still move pretty easy and the water filled bubble levels still work perfectly after they've been in the ground for about a 100 years. :wow:

Hidy DELL . Nice finds , looks like a , CT205A8 , Scovill MF'G Co . Waterbury . It is the only one with a out side rim .

Dan, I'm glad you are getting out, but I'm NOT glad school is back in session :grin:
What is the name on the silver thing..,Rosen...what? Name of the family that lived there? V and IH are sweeeeet.
I found that second hole on the old road we hunted. It is a beautiful site. I swung for a half hour yesterday before it got dark and got a nice flat button. I'll hold off on it if you guys are headed out here anytime soon. Let me know. Drew :groovy:

The V and IH are always great finds and the sterling piece is very unique. :smitten:

Hey not bad on the relics, I'd be happy. That silver thing looks like first of all belonged to a women that was well to do seeing how it is silver and engraved. Are the hallmarks English or American? There are some good sites that deal with just identifying hallmarks. I forgot the one I used to help Chris with that silver item he found a long time ago. First thing is identifying what it was used for, maybe something pertaining to grooming or something. I'll have to look at it again. Maybe you can show me in person sometime soon. :)
