Does anyone know what this is?

Does anyone know what this is? :confused: I found it at the two houses i've been hunting which date back to the 1850's or so. It doesn't open up very far and it's about the size of a quarter. Thanks Donna

it looks like a small deorative hinge to maybe a jewelry box , old cupboard or the like .

Yeah, I agree. The design doesn't appear to be symmetrical. Maybe handmade? :dontknow:
