I sure hope someone can ID this, it may be older then I thought, there was a lot of activity here starting in the 1700s and the coin I found a short distance from where I found this relic is mid 1700s.

The whole cap is sturdy, (rigid ). The hole in the top is square and the one in the rear is round, not that that makes a difference. I'm thinking the hole in the rear may be a vent hole to pour something out of the top hole.

If you notice the pic of the under side, at the rear, there appears to have been some sort of reinforcement of some sort where the hole is.

It is also fairly heavy for it's size and not fragile by any means.

Frank without actually holding it in my hands its very hard to say exactly what it is for sure . it does resemble a few things though , among them would be a lid of some sorts an ornate furniture piece or even part of an old firearm or flintlock pistol. sorry i can't narrow it down more .

I think I'm getting close to making a positive ID. It seems I have a grip cap for a shotgun, rifle or pistol. I felt it was hunting related because of where I found it. Now I am going to try and narrow it down to see if I can determind what firearm it came off of.

I really enjoy doing the research part of this hobby....not only researching for sports to hunt but also reseaching for relics and coin identification.

Post a coin on this site and someone is going to tell you what it is....you gotta love it.

Having posted pics on many sites, and a big thanks to those that replied, I was confident I had a grip cap from a rifle, shotgun or pistol.

However, I also sent out many inquiries to antique gun dealers and received a reply from one that felt it was a cap for an very old hunting knife. Because of the size, he may very well be correct.

I was thinking the end off a sword handle. About the same size. Just a guess though.
