Took off this morning to hunt an old farmhouse about 40 miles away. When I arrived, it was disappointing to see about an inch of slushy snow blanketing the yard. With the snow on the ground... I knew it would be quite messy digging holes. So instead, I traveled just a bit further and returned to the park where Ron and I found some very, very shallow Seated and Barbers.

The park had many shallow oldies left. The only item here found deeper than three inches was the token from six.

A few bonus IH's. One was right under the surface at about an inch.

The deepest target of the day was this token. It is the exact size as a Large Cent.
Research dates it from the 1850's. :happydance01:

I'm not really sure why older coins are so shallow here. I've only worked a small area of this park, so a return trip or two is in
order before the end of the year.

Sweet finds |:cheering:
Are there alot of trees in the area that you're hunting?
The park i'm hunting had the shield nickel and V nickel not very deep because of the net of fine roots keeping them from going very deep.
That looks like the place to hunt. Hit it good!

Thanks. :) There are only a few old trees in this park. But, the area I am hunting is on a slight incline. To add to the mix... the soil contains a lot of sand. I would have thought sandy soil would allow the coins to sink faster than normal... not slower.

I'm with you. I love finding old tokens.
I found a little more info on the business owner after he moved his shop to Madison, Wisconsin . Interesting to read.

Great coins, looks like you have the right spot. They could be shallow due to soil density. I've notice in some spots around here that the clay layer is at about three inches and the coins tend to lay on top of that layer and not go much deeper. Great hunting. :peace: :clapping: :clapping:

Wonderful token, Joe! :smitten: You definitely do have to hit that site again. Such shallow targets just beg for another shot.
