I had a chance to get out for a few hours today but wasn't overly enthusiastic about the field we had to hunt. It has been hit time and time again and the finds now are mostly round balls and small scraps of metal.
But, it was a beautiful day and it rained yesterday making for some good hunting conditions. As I expected, my first find was part of a harmonica reed followed by two round balls and two shell casings, one marked US and the other just has a U stamp. Then I got an a small piece of metal that I haven't identified yet. It has Pat July 24 on one side and KB or RB 77 on the other side.
As I started to leave I got a real strong 75 on my DFX but the target was only 2s deep so I immediately thought modern dime.
Imagine my surprise when an 1842 Seated Liberty dime Fell out of the plug I dug. This is the only silver coin that I know of from this particular field and I am very happy to have found it.

Congrats on the seated dime! 1842 sure is an early one. That other thing looks like a tip to a leather belt.

What I first thought to be KB or RB 77 turned out to be 1877. So, the patent date is July 24 1877. I have been told it is a fabric clasp.

That dime is a beauty- big time congrats! All that work finally paid off |:cheering:

Your story gives me incentive not to give up on some of my long-time hunting spots!

I love finding old harmonica reeds, the music comes into my mind, thinking about who might have been under that old oak tree and the family listening to it, kids dancing around in the old picnic grove, etc...
