More Indians plus a Barber at the old park on Cinco de Mayo

This morning I got up before dawn and headed to the old park I've been hunting lately. I wanted to get a few hours of detecting in before other people started showing up. It was really nice to have the park all to myself as the sun was rising, and the 3 hours of uninterrupted detecting was very pleasant.
Not only that, but they FINALLY mowed the grass! :clapping:

In spite of the ideal hunting conditions, things started out really slow today. After about an hour I only had two wheat cents and a 1954 nickel. But then I found a 1900 Indian Head Cent and my spirits were lifted. Not long after that I found an 1899 Barber Dime, then a 1904 Indian Head, then an 1898 Indian Head.

There are still old coins to be found at this park, but it takes some patience. There are a lot of long periods where no old coins are found. I guess that's to be expected in a public park. Nevertheless, the oldies that are there make for an enjoyable hunt.

The 1899 Barber Dime has some old scratches and staining, but it was nice to get one from the 1800s:

This medallion was about 8 deep and is about the size of a large cent. I can't make out any of the writing, I'm not even sure it's in English. Almost looks like a devil on the obverse? He's holding a spherical object that has a handle. I have no idea what this is:

The 9 is gutted out with corrosion. At just right of 6 o'clock is ...TED. At 8 o'clock (upside down) is THE and at 10 o'clock it looks like NATIONAL.

Thanks for the help, Dave! I do see the details you have mentioned. Between 3 and 4 o'clock I think it might say ILL, I'm thinking it may list the town in Illinois where this event took place. I also think there is writing on the reverse around the edge. Unfortunately, the medallion is made from cheap, unstable metal and is badly pitted. I may see if it will clean up any better.
