I'd venture to say that the iron buckles were less common than the brass buckles because they were harder to manufacture. They were probably more expensive

Dan the barrels are 4 1/2 inches long. I assumed they came from a double barreled pistol. I would agree they would not be firing a large single round
Jeff , two questions after some observations …. Looking at the gun barrels they seem very thinned walled to accept round ball ammunition
