July 3rd hunt

Donnie Brian and I finally managed a hunt all together , nice to have them both together . The day was a beautiful breezy day our day was to head back to a couple of cellars

Attachment 59902Brian and I did pretty good last outing , it was slow going for a bit but I found a hot spot that netted me a screaming but shallow target !:shocked03: I was sure it was an aluminum state forest sign :lol: but pleasantly surprised to see this Attachment 59903 A complete looking pocket watch Attachment 59906:bananadance:. Later on while taking a lunch break I managed to open the watch and saw this Attachment 59904Attachment 59905 Very close by the watch I also dug up a 5 coin coinspill (4 indian head pennies 1880 to 1889 and a V-Nickel 1891) they probably coincide to the watch's era . :cheering:Afterwards it was again slow and I only picked up some brass scrap , iron and a few buttons (1 tombac) and 1 that matched Donnie's "honeycomb" gold gilted one that cleaned up pretty well Ill post before and after of that one and this freshly dug officer's Connecticut state seal button from around the Civil War era Attachment 59907.

Nice hunt. That honeycomb button is really cool and in great shape! Am I seeing correctly that the watch is full of old newspaper? If so, maybe some careful work could get a date, or at least a good idea.

Dan, you had a great hunt! There is still a lot of gilt left on your honey comb button and that Connecticut militia is gorgeous!

Love to know what the news paper scraps say!! Nice Connecticut button too!

I think its a page from a book and it was glued or stuck to the back of the watch , someone hollowed out the watch "guts" glued the piece of parchment to the inside back and then the middle was stuffed with some type of fabric (still don't know what kind of cloth it is). Thanks Chris

The Ct. button has no gilt on it whats so ever the button may have been in a fire as that whole side where I found it had a charred stain in the dirt of about every hole I dug. Thanks Donnie

Not 100% positive, but i got a few key words and tracked it to a partial line from the novel "The Hutted Knoll" by J. Fennimore Cooper, 1867.

That's dam cool. Makes me wonder what it's significance was to who carried it. And in his watch, kinda like his smart phone of the time.

As I said, I'm not completely sure it's correct since I only had the name Maud and 2 words after it as a reference. There were more hits that dated to the last 30 years or so. That shows there probably are more matches out there that don't pop up on top of a search. Not to mention most newspaper articles won't be found either except by a deep search of specific sites. It would be much better to have more to go on, with more unique phrases.

Dan, from your pictures the weather looked perfect. The pocket watch seems to have a mysterious past but your CT officers civil war era button is great......:congrats:

Al , I personally think the watch was used either as a change purse or as a mourning locket with personal items of the loved one kept inside .

That is a interesting find with the paper in the watch and some nice buttons! Isn't it neat that the real adventure starts after the finds and not just when we make the finds!

That watch is a beautiful time capsule. My guess there is some meaning in the page that is in there.
