Early Artillery Buttons, shoe buckle etc.

Went back to the spot I found the 1746 George II and other items and came up with a bit more. Found a couple of artillery buttons. One from the war of 1812 and one from the 1814-1821 period. Also came up with a fish hook shaped square nail and a whatsit. Any ideas on the whatsit or what purpose the square nail?

The whatsit is a padlock. Sorry, I couldn't resist! :)

Don, I was told by a woodworker friend of mine that your fish hook shaped nail is a "clinched" nail which was used to hold two flat pieces of wood together, like a batten on a door. A set of pliers were used to turn the nail after hammering it through the wood. Then a special hammer was used to drive it like a staple. I personally get fooled by these things because of the roundness combined with the oldness :lol: He also said that they were used to hold hardware in place.

A couple of NICE buttons ! That whatsit is pretty interesting. I was going to say it must be horse hardware but I'm not sure :dontknow:

nice finds! could the whatsit be part of a brass horse bit? only thing i can think of

Awesome Finds! Have you looked into the military records of the person who lived there (assuming you know the name)?

Went back to the site today and as things were lean, I worked at a verrrrry slow pace. Found another button :) It's not quite as nice as the last, but still has the loop in the back.
