Anyone figure out a way to dig in frozen ground yet?
Yep. When I was a union laborer (582), and we had to dig a hole in frozen ground, we would haul out a tow behind air compressor and use 90lb & 60lb jackhammers.
Its really the only way. :frozen:
We could put a man on the moon 50 YEARS AGO and we still can't dig a simple hole in January
Saw an episode of a detecting show on TV years ago where they were detecting old mining camps in Alaska. When they found an area with several good targets they made a circle of 55 gallon steel drums around it and built fires in them. Maybe a day or 2 later the ground in the middle was defrosted enough to dig.
Hole saw and cordless drill
I don't think Don's idea would fit on my belt :) ...and Chris's idea would work, but I'm not certain it would be worth the effort for a shot gun shell...or worse :)
Now, Mike's idea is something like I was thinking about....how about a jig saw type of tool where I could go around a New England potato if need be?? I'm a musician...so bear with me when talking tools :)
I'm sure a space heater, cardboard box with cutout for ventilation and extension cord would work. Someone try it and let me know how it goes.
Get a number 10 can, apply a handle. Load up with charcoal bricketts, apply lighter fluid, light and get the charcoal hot. When you get a good signal put the can on top of the target area. Keep detecting until you find another good target.. If the hot can has not softened the ground yet at the first target....wait.
Sorry Drew, this is the best I can come up with
Just drink a lot of coffee Drew.
Explosives, it's the only way...;)
The funny part is I am only half joking Dan. Before I got into detecting I used to hunt fields for Indian artifacts. One brutally cold day I saw a beautiful base sticking out of a furrow. I had a screw driver but the ground was like cement and I knew I would just snap that point in two if I tried to muscle it out. After a liberal dosing of 98.6 degree recycled water, it loosened the ground just enough so I could extract the point. The tip was missing but it was still a beauty.
DEL --- And what? Wait until you get enough pee to thaw the ground??? Either I immediately understood this or am way off base. I am laughing anyway....
