    Looks like something like an acid was used to dissolve some copper. The nickel clad is harder and therefore doesnt dissolve as quickly as the pure copper core.

    Can you post a picture of the mint mark area enlarged?
    It *looks* to be an S, as I have several 1916 dimes in about the same condition, but it's very hard to tell.

    Correct- you can tell it is an 1859 from the wreath on the reverse which was used that one year only.

    I don't have a Sam's Club card, but I do have a Costco card. I use the Kirkland Signature batteries (48 AA for about $13) in both my Ace 250 and XLT. They are comparable to Duracells in all respects...
