Floating sifter?

Im interested in building myself a floating sifter. I would appreciate any suggestions plans, photos, ect.

Frank ( Fsa46) has made his own floating sifter , he welds pretty well too as i've seen some of his heavy duty made scoops

I would use pvc pipe. I have seen some very nice ones made that work great. The pvc pipe works great as a frame and screen in the center of it

A couple weeks back I saw a thread that had numerous designs displayed in pics. most were made out of pvc. One even had a watertight compartment for car keys. If it wasn't this forum it was (dare I say it \) findmall. I'll try to find it again.

Here are a few pics of my sifter. It is made from a 23 diameter poly drum, is 4 deep , with 7/32 holes drilled in the bottom.

I used a 4 &quotoss noodle for flotation. I use chaffing gear where the ties go, and holes drilled in them for the ties to go through. The first sifter I made did not have the holes in the chaffing gear and the ties kept slipping off no matter how tight they were.

Marine epoxy was used at the joints and special chaffing gear made at that spot with a band in the back to support that joint.

I made a place to accommodate my scoop at the top of the sifter but must admit I never have used it. I use 2 pounds of lead sinkers on a 4' para cord line to keep the sifter from drifting. I also use a 3' lanyard to attatch to my belt.

Many of the things I have done are not neccessary but I made this to accommodate my hunting style.

It is important to use a white shifter , it makes finding the target much easier when you get our age. LOL

I do not use the sifter when hunting in sand but it is a huge help when hunting in rocks, shells, gravel, mud and etc.

I hope this give you an idea of what is needed in making a scoop.

Thought I would post a couple pics of my first sifter so you could see the changes I made.

The first sifter was made with with a piece of poly perforated plate I bought from McMaster Carr. It was grey in color and had to be painted on occasion.

You can see how I cut out the bottom of the sifter and bolted in the plate with nylon nuts and bolts.

I gave this to my good friend CJ and it works great. I just wanted to make a second and tweak it a little.

very impressive floating sifters Frank , are you taking in any orders for them yet you could put me down for atleast one . they look great , do they handle the scoop loads of the montser scoops pretty well . i mean their pretty boyant and hard to tip over ??

Dan, I can easily put two or even three scoops in these sifters with no problem what so ever. My scoops have large buckets and there isn't a problem.

The only problem with ANY sifter is in rough water, and I really don't care for hunting in those conditions anyway. It didn't take me long to figure out a water hunter needs places to hunt when conditions are not favorable in open water and I'm certain most hunters have a back-up spot when they are like that.

Another thing that is important to mention is that these sifters should be kept out to the sunlight WHEN NOT IN USE because the UV rays will damage the noodle over time if stored/left outdoors.
