2 KNUCKLEHEADS GO FROZEN CELLAR HOLE HUNTING* 2 FATTY IH'S

Yeah well Todd & myself had the bright idea to go do some cellar hole detecting. a lot of frozen ground in the woods after the deep freeze we had all week. frost chunks were 4 inches thick with some plugs.we really had to work for our finds today.
I guess I did ok despite the circumstances.a few buttons.a large gold gilted designed colonial dandy button & a 4 holed pewter button.a small ram rod pipe and 2 fatty IH's 1860 & 1864

Dave, the basket weave pattern button looks sweet and the 1860 Injun looks like it has great detail. Gratz on some kewl finds

I think I may have learned something about large plain dandy buttons often we find plain ones and I always thought to myself how bland & drab such a large button with nothing on it. so,being the rocket scientist that I am I have come to 2 conclusions A)either they were made plain OR! B)the designed gilt deteriorated away! <: happydance02 lol. the reason i say this is because..... looking at my button below' the gold gilt which holds the design is almost ready to fall off.you can clearly see on bottom right at 8 o'clock position on front the exposed area reveals a plain button underneath.
I sealed it with hairspray. But, while holding it, you can just feel that the gilting has separated from the face of the button and you could literally just peel the gilt from the button face if you wanted to. in other words on this piece it seems like it is an applied designed gilt onto a plain button. maybe this explains why so many of my large dandies are just plain

Interesting observation on the buttons. Makes sense to me. Hard core hunters, definately. on getting some keepers.

Nice finds. Great looking button. When I first started detecting, I used to go in frozen ground. I love detecting but I'm not as crazy as I used to be. I can remember taking a hammer and chisel to dig with, and it worked. If you can stand the cold and dig in frozen ground, all the better for you. Plus you'll be ahead of everyone else on the finds. Keep up the frigid detecting, your posts are great.

your crazy !! all clocks i see the fat hand is at the 8 is in the lower left on the clock face lol

Dave some gilt is on very thick , you know this by now ... some are even applied on in a very sheet of layered silver or gold (not very often) and we've all seen how the gilt holds up very well after centuries. so its only natural that the moisture and oxidation will find the tiny holes or worn spots in this gilt and start breaking down the bare metal underneath , undermining its hold to the button and yes stripping away and a lot of design . its even possible that your gilted design was a seperate piece applied onto the face of the button and then the whole piece gilted as one.
