    Re: METEORITE?

Sure is pretty, but since it's not highly attracted to magnets, it's not a meteorite.

    Re: METEORITE?

That is really wild looking Dave stretcher: It does look like buck shot spots. So you don't know what kind of metal it is? Teeth marks crossed my mind :-\ That would be some serious pain.

Was hoping meteorite, but John knows his stuff... I hope someone knows - soooo curious!!!

Verrry interesting! In some of the pictures it looks like gold. What type of a sound did it give you.

    Here's a second test...

Go to a good pharmacy and buy (~$20) a nickel test kit. Pharmacies sell the for people who are allergic to nickel...backs of watches, etc.

Test it for nickel. Nickel does not occur naturally in earthbound rocks, but can be found in virtually all meteorites in sufficient quantities. It's a long story, but true.

While it is true that a very tiny percentage of meteorites are not attracted to magnets, it is so rare that it's practically impossible. If your specimen fails the nickel test, you can take it to the bank that it's not a meteorite.

The dimples are interesting and certainly indicate a heating/cooling process of some kind. In meteorite hunting, we often find thumbprints in some types of meteorites. However, the large number on your find are pretty unusual. When a meteorite contains thumbprints, they are not distributed like the one in your pics.

Sorry Buddy...I wish it weren't so.

    Re: METEORITE?

I thought I had found one as well. One expert says yes and one says no because he had never seen one like mine because its pourous. They are magnetic. Most are smooth from where they entered the atmosphere and melted solid and a small piece is very heavy. Another quality is they are extremely hard and cannot be busted up with a hammer. Thats the knowledge I gained from asking and research.
    One find at a time.
