WINNER!!! - The Next One Off My List Contest

9-28-13 ***SEE RESPONSE BELOW FOR WINNER***

I recently found my first Barber Quarter which had been my most wanted coin to cross of the list for a long time. So now I find myself wondering what my next first might be. I would think the most likely candidates are shield nickel, half dime, or maybe seated quarter but if this hobby has taught me anything it's that you just never know!

Anyway, this contest is about you telling me what I'll find next. Here's how it works - below is a list of US coin types. The ones I have found already are crossed off. Post your guess for any type that is not crossed off that I will find next and include a possible year. The winner is whoever guesses the correct type and the closest year. As an example you might guess 1875 shield nickel. If I find an 1880 shield nickel next week and you were the only one to guess shield nickel, you win. However, if someone else guessed 1882 shield nickel, they win since they also have the right type and are closer to the year.

Here are the rules... you must have been a forum member for 10 days and have 10 posts in order to guess. You must be an active forum member at the time the contest ends. One guess only per member. The type and year of my next first must be identifiable by a general consensus (in the event of a worn type or date). If there is any reasonable doubt about type or year (if it comes to picking a winner) then we will have to wait for my next first after that. Ties will go to whoever guessed first. The contest will continue until there is a winner, so if my next first is a type no one has guessed, the contest is not over. This contest could be over relatively soon or it could go on for a long, long time.

The prize will be a $25.00 gift certificate to Angel's Bin.

I did not include any gold coin types... what are the chances? I suppose if you want to guess one of those go ahead. If I find one AND I survive the excitement AND you guessed that type I will DOUBLE the prize ($50 gift cert to Angel's Bin). If you are feeling that lucky though maybe you should be buying lottery tickets too. lol

Anyway, I hope this is well thought out enough to work. If there are any questions, issues, problems please let me know and I will revise or remove as needed!

    Thanks and good luck!

I think it's a great contest, Matt! Thank you for stepping up and putting it together.

If you don't mind me asking, what state are you located in? That might help me (and others) to make a better educated guess as to what types of coins you are likely to find.

Re: NEW!!! - The Next One Off My List Contest

Sure! I'm in upstate NY. For years I have been mostly a school yard coin shooter but lately I have been venturing more into parks and residential wooded areas. Most of the places I hunt are within a dozen miles of the Erie Canal. My last firsts were the Barber quarter last weekend (from a school) and a silver trime last December (from a wooded area). Let me know if that helps!

    And the winner is...

And the winner is... Tony Two Cent!

Congrats to Tony for his guess of 1868 shield nickel! You were one year off Tony, as today I found my first shield nickel- dated 1869!

HEAVYMETALNUT was almost the winner since I got an 1816 Matron head cent a bit earlier on the same hunt. A few years older and his guess if an 1812 classic head LC would have taken the prize!

I was starting to worry that my little contest here was going to last for years! lol Thanks to all who too the time to place a guess. I'd hold another contest for the NEXT coin of my list if I wasn't worried it would take forever!!!
