Sat. & Sun. hunts Ornate shoe buckle, Early Copper, civil war Button...etc

Had to work a 1/2 day Saturday so I headed out to a nearby spot. I hunted this spot before and found an Andrew Jackson button after a short hunt. Went back for a second trip and got some old colonial buttons that included a nice big tombac and another cloak size one with a neat waffle/basket weave pattern. My last target of a 2 hour hunt scored me an early copper with Lady Britannia on the reverse, the obverse can only make out the back hair ribbon with bust facing right.

On Sunday, I hunted with Dave at a few cellar holes that we plotted out. Luckily, Dave's keen eye spotted a small depression off the side of the old road. This is where we scored a good amount of old buttons but it seems that most of the one's I dug were fire damaged.
My best find here was a sweet Ornate shoe buckle that still had a silver wash on some of the front side of the buckle. Some of the Iron tongue and chape was still intact and a Maker's Mark initials still remain on the back side .

That last hole of the day gave up some buttons including a Civil War Infantry eagle button. It still has a small amount of gilt on it and Dave pointed out that it seems larger than most civil war eagle buttons he has seen. I did a side by side comparison in one pic. I also nabbed a semi-key Date Indian Head in nice shape dated 1876 and a larger two piece back mark is Wadha US&G CO. extremely fine

The first two pics are from my solo hunt Saturday and the rest are from Sunday..

To each their own Al, I know most coin shooters love their silver coins but for me, if it isn't old, then I have little interest unless of course it's a gold ring

By the way Al, a little tip on cleaning war nickels... I have dug many of them and I found the easiest and best way for me to clean them is to place it in a mixture of water and ammonia 10 mins each side then wipe clean. It looks better than the fake polished look you get from baking soda results in my opinion. If you haven't tried it give it a shot

A very good question Todd , it seems some silversmith's made these and i also get the impression that some might have been made by actual shoemaker's . I haven't found any books on the subject though . if you come across any info i would be interested to see it and i'll pass on anything i might find .

lol lol Dave the button's size could be any number of things , the great coat buttons sizes could have changed late in the war or just after . I'm really not an expert in Civil War accroutment supplies .
