I thought it was lost forever!
When I moved into my house on Church Street in Champaign, Illinois in 1998, I hunted the yard there with my old Fisher 1260-X. The house was built in 1934 and I did find a few old coins. I put everything that I found in a box.
I hadn't seen that box for over 14 years.
I assumed that the box had been stolen or that I had somehow lost it when we moved here to Monticello. Ordinarily not a huge deal EXCEPT that I had found a 1914-D wheat cent in that yard and I knew that it was in that box.
Tonight I was in our basement going through some boxes looking for something else and I found it! I can't believe it, I thought it was lost forever. It was like opening a time capsule. Some of the silver dimes still have the dirt on them. Most importantly, the 1914-D wheat cent was still in the box!
Funny how a couple of the Mercs turned dark. Maybe it was from the acid in the cardboard box that they were in?
And the 1914-D wheat cent. I'm so glad it isn't lost!
