new to metal detecting

As a 'new kid' myself, I would suggest that you remember to have fun. Take the time to learn what your machine is telling you. There is a GREAT support network here at American Detectorist, and I think you will find this forum a super place to learn from some of the best!

Hey, welcome aboard from western MA. My advice to you is dig neat holes (buy a pinpointer too), dig a lot of signals so you learn what your machine is telling you, and most of all have fun. When you have detected for a while, there are many more suggestions you will get from everyone. Enjoy the hobby....it is addictive

Welcome to the hobby! When you make a find, do not say BOOM BABY! or talk of roundness or civ. lol You should dig lots of trash at first and then as you learn to tell those signals from the good ones you won't dig as much trash. Best wishes and happy hunting, Dave.

i am fairly new to this hobby,careful it almost becomes a way of life..lol. the main thing i learned at first is metal detectors do not lie....if its still beeping keep on digging. this forum is great and every time i click on it i learn something...usually lots of somethings...enjoy

Welcome to the hobby and to the forum tasmornmale yes please try an dig carefully and replace the grass as best as you can . just one complaint from someone can ruin your chances at returning and tarnish the hobby for the next guy who wants to detect there. be patient and have fun .

Welcome from Kentucky! Like someone else mentioned, def buy a pin pointer! A good site to find old houses is www.historicmapworks.com

As far as Al's suggestion to dig a neat hole- slice a small plug the shape of a horseshoe, flip it over, place soil on towel or Frisbee (if well-manicured lawn and people are watching lol ), find target with pin pointer, put soil back in hole and press or step on plug- like a puzzle piece. This can help keep detecting legal in your county... it was outlawed in one of our counties here in Ky.
