Saturday's cellar hole hunt with Dave...not much to see here

Dave and I had been wanting to get to a few sites that we had found last year but flooded rivers and swamps had blocked our access points when we made an attempt to get to them. When we found out that Dan and George had recently been to the sites, we decided to roll the dice and try it anyway. I wasn't to fond of going but, Dave seemed like he was itching to try these spots.

Targets were very hard to come by however, we both managed a couple of keepers. Dan and George had done a very good job at cleaning these sites up but I think George missed a 4 coin pocket spill in the middle of the dirt road that was in front of one site( 1881 Indian, 1907 Indian, 1910 & 1917 Wheat backs). Also found a nice thimble right on the cellar hole lip and a brass shoe buckle chape a few feet from that. I small piece of a shoe buckle frame which is pretty ornate would have been a nice find if it was the full frame and a basket weave button with a unique back mark was the only other things of interest.

I really wasn't expecting much in the finds on Saturday after Dave told me you guys had been there already. Dave still wanted to give it a go but I am glad we went. We met a really nice guy there who stopped to talk to us while we were digging. He actually turned out to be one of the land owners. He had no problems with us being there and exploring even more. He told us that he knows of 5-6 cellar holes in the area but it was near the end of the day.

It's nice to know that we can go back there and search some of the privately owned areas.With a little more research I may go back there and see what he was talking about.

Sounds like Del threw out a challenge to you and Dave about giving up one of your sites to see what George and Dan can uncover what you and Dave left behind. Now to an avid reader of these posts I would like to see this happen. This could be an ongoing saga.

Never.....unless there are no metal objects left in the ground for a keeper to be masked by.

True. We generally consider a site hunted out when there are no easy hits in areas that everyone would normally do, like the lip of a cellar hole, well area, paths etc... When we find an target that is easy to hear, then we perk up on the potential of that site. Kinda like a bloodhound

well for example the one you two hit up above , we were there only the one time but we had Drew and Brandon along so we'll count it as two visits to be fair. so would it be fair for you two to hit a "new" site (to you) twice and then hand it over to us one time and lets see how you two guys did ??
