Railroad Check?? ever see one before ?

We hunted an old abandoned farm house today and found this in the back yard. it seems to be made of copper.
Any idea what this is or what it was used for?

That's a great find, Don. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad was bought out by Illinois Central RR. The logo on your RR tag was used from 1896 to 1923. I found one just like it over 5 years ago along the railroad tracks where a tiny town once was up until the early '30s when the local lake was created.

Don, I did not clean it with anything except water. As far as value, not sure. I posted it in another forum a few years ago and someone provided an ad link to a very nice one that was being sold for the price of $155.
