Any ideas? Round object with Roman numerals

I found this object at a former old home site in the woods. (The same site where I found the 1869 Indian Head Cent.)

It is about 2" in diameter and has Roman numerals 1 thru 12 on the face. It has a stem on the back like it may have been attached to some kind of valve or control knob. The Roman numerals make me think of a timepiece, but this object doesn't really seem to be part of a watch or clock. Could it be part of some kind of timer, maybe?

It's a real head scratcher. Any ideas?

First thought was that it was from a pocket/window sundial.

Good one Don! It's a neat find Tony. Does it seem heavy enough for everyday use or is it light like a toy piece?

It's a decoder for the messages hidden in the original Declaration of Independence; buried along a ley line by 18th century Masons.

Sadly, that was my best guess.

Seeing it goes from 1 to 12, I'm guessing clock part.

Not really sure what it is but agree with the others in that its some type of time device. Would favor a sun dial more then a clock beause of the size. Hope you find out, good luck. Safe & HH

Actually I don't think it's a timepiece. My impression is a spring tension dial, like maybe an old sewing machine or some other similar piece of equipment.

I found one exactly like that Tony! Along with numerous larger pieces of clockwork... still never figured out exactly what it belonged to but assumed it was to the clock with the 1-12 numerals. Thinking back also found 1908 barber dime and a consumer tax token at that site

I know exactly what it is Tony. It is the timer dial off of a mechanical kitchen clock. You could use the dial to set an alarm that would trip a repeating bell when your food was done. Nice pull!
