Only 1keeper today, but it's a good one

Up & out of the house at 5am this morning for a few hours hunt before the family even woke up. Researched the site of a cellar hole 20 minutes from my house. This site seemed to be hunted pretty good prior, but as I've heard others say, "a pounded site is never completely hunted out". I had no keepers for the first 2 hours, then I had a solid 80 VDI repeatable reading at 4" depth, right against a stone wall. After digging the plug, the target was deeper than the 4", indicating a larger target. Unfortunately, I ended up knicking the target a bit with my lesche digging tool (I thought it was a rock- rookie mistake). Got the target out & to my surprise, it was a Civil War eagle breast plate. I've been dying to find anything old with an eagle on it. Mission accomplished.

there are many variants of this 1826 designed type of shoulder belt plate but yours looks to be the enlisted man's 1856-1863 one . it should measure to 63mm across and is known as the "short arrows" version. again great piece of military history.

Thanks for that information Dan. Yup, measures about 63mm. Now I have something good to bring to the next YTC meeting.

Really cool! Wish we had relics like that in my area of the country.

A lot of people would have gotten the hell out of there after 2 hours of no keepers but persistence is the key. You put in the time and earned that one Kevin. Super find and as Dan said, great center piece to display

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the props.

I told the wife that she has to sleep on the couch tonight. She asked why? I said the eagle breast plate will be beside me tonight honey.

Congrats on the find. I wish I found something more than I did this weekend. I found a ric amount of clad in maybe a 20x30 area, but I think I need to research the spot more. There is supposed to be a field where the military drilled in the late 1600's. I found two plaques but I was unsure which of the 4 fields near the area are the true field. But Im intending to head back. And there are quite old houses near the area to do some door knocking..

That's an AWESOME find! if you know the name of the family that lived there, take a look into the CT CW Archives to see if you can find the persons war record.
