    What's up with this?

Has anyone ever seen a coin with a name stamped into it?

I have seen many counter stamped large cents, that is relatively common, but I've never seen a counter stamped shield nickel before.
    Lifetime totals:
10 Large Cents, 415 Indian Heads, 2 Two Cent Pieces, 1 Capped Bust Half Dime, 1 Seated Half Dime, 10 Shield Nickels, 68 V Nickels, 124 Buffalo Nickels, 31 War Nickels, 16 Seated Dimes, 131 Barber Dimes, 405 Mercury Dimes, 249 Rosies, 4 Seated Quarters, 18 Barber Quarters, 20 Standing Liberty Quarters, 89 Silver Washingtons, 1 Seated Half, 3 Barber Halves, 16 Walking Liberty Halves

very nice coin , these are pretty common and some one or a business would do this to pennies or other coin denominations as a way of free advertising back in the ol days. it was better then business cards an all the hands that the money go through so it worked very well.

the stamps usually make these coins worth more in value to collectors

Thanks for all the replies and explanations. I was unaware that such a thing existed. I found out that they were handed out by a New York jeweler in 1868. I have no idea how it got down to Oklahoma. I will be able to sleep now

I had heard something about this a long time ago but only these guys mentioning is sparked the memory. NY is a fairly big destination spot. Maybe in 1868 it was from immigration. Someone came in thru Ellis, went to jewelry store in NYC, then headed out to OK and settled (prob near family already here).

it was still legal U.S. currency so it probably made the trip out west with settlers, i did find it in the counterstamp listing on this page http://www.exonumia.com/art/cmd.htm

Nice story, but I'm inclined to believe that a pigeon picked up the coin off a NY sidewalk and took the long way cross country until it crashlanded in indian territory. (it could happen)

No OxShoeDrew, I got it when my mother-in-law passed away in August of last year. She left us a lot of old coins, but I found this to be unique. I had never seen a counter stamped coin at all. I hope I can dig some of my own.
