French woods - Roman coin... and a seal matrix !

    Hi all,

Spending Christmas in France. It is probably 5 to 6 years since we last went to France for Christmas. But with little kids, it's almost a no-brainer. They have to see their grandmas and grandpas !! (Also, if we don't go back, our parents will probably disinherit us !)

Anyway... Went out in the woods for 2 to 3 hours with a friend. We didn't find anything during the first hour maybe even an hour and a half. Then, as we got closer to a path in the woods, my friend got a first coin. We then went up a hill in the woods and I got my first good signal : a roman coin. (Hadrian As, Roman Emperor from 11th August AD 117 to 10th July AD 138).

And then, as my friend found another coin (probably 16th/17th century), I got a very strong signal :

Now, that was a great feeling to dig this seal matrix !!! Unfortunately, I do not have any seal wax. I used some of my kids' playdoh but it's just not the same. Still, it seems to represent Mary holding the Christ with somebody praying on each side. Lettering is a little worn. Hopefully, I will be able to find some seal wax and I'll get a better reading of the item.

According to this document, this type of seal matrix dates back to 1300-1550 AD. YEAH !!

Thanks guys ! I finally used candle wax and it worked quite ok.
I worked a little on the pic but I am far from being a specialist. I just gave it a try. Hope you'll see Mary with her crown, with possibly the Christ on the right and somebody kneeling and possibly praying on the left. Also, there seems to be a fleur-de-lys right beside Mary's head.

Done... Don. But you already knew. Indeed I went back to the same woods and got a worn Louis XVI copper coin. Circa 1780s.

Great seal matrix. Also love the Roman Coin. Hadrian's coins often show up more often than those of other emperors as he traveled across the empire for much of his reign.
