Nothing like a 2 Cent piece

Had a couple of hours to hunt the other day and thought I would drive about a half hour south to hunt in the hope the ground wasn't frozen solid in the woods. Had a spot I picked out a few months ago that I never got to. Met my friend Charles over there and thought we'd give it a shot. It's right next to a stream and not far from the site of an old mill. Hit the woods and found there was a lot of trash. After about 15 minutes got a good signal and low and behold it was an 1864 2 Cent piece. It's only the 3rd 2 cent piece I've found in 35 years. I had found my second about 6 months ago and the first one was more than 30 years ago. They only made them for a short period of time and it seems they didn't circulate much. Although the 1864 is one of the most common dates I was happy to find it. Considering what it looked like when I pulled it out of the ground it didn't clean up too bad. Ended up pulling a 1907 Indian too which was also pretty poor looking coming out of the ground. Only found 2 coins, but at least they weren't clad or memorials.

Great find. That's a beautiful looking coin.
Although I watched one get dug this year, I've yet to find one and it's still top on my bucket list.

You think that '07 IH is poor looking? You should look back at my 1901 IH. The two center is in decent shape. Don't worry. a lot of us still have to find one compared to your 3.

It seems like the woods is the place to hunt when the ground is frozen elsewhere. I may have to give that a try.

Nice job Don and nice to see you were rewarded for your efforts. I found my first 2 center just last summer and was happy to have found it. Mine was only 2 inches deep in a mass of nails...almost like the guy had nails and change in his pocket.

Hi Don. There certainly was a lot of trash... but there, also slept those gems ! I think you cleaned them up pretty well and they are in quite a good shape.
Tony Two-Cent, it's right that sometimes it takes a little longer for the ground to get frozen in the woods. The leaves cover actually build a protective layer against low temperatures.
In these woods though, some areas were absolutely soft and some others were definitely frozen. It might be related to the proportion of water in the ground.Well, I'm no expert either !

Hey Don where did that 2 center come in on the VDI? I've been digging a lot of 80-81 and up signals last year but feel it's time to come down to the mid VDIs a bit this year to try and hit some of those coins of that era,if that's what it takes. Cool finds!

I have a CTX-3030 and it came in around 12-44. The Minelab machines give you two readings, one on the ferrous end and one for conductivity. I dig most of the 11-12 numbers on the ferrous end and most of the conductivity numbers over 7 with the exception of 19 for shotgun shells and 37 when the depth is less than 4" because it's screw caps. Yes, I still dig my share of junk, but if you don't dig some you're missing some good coins.
