Thread: Gold medallion??

    Gold medallion??

Found this on the beach last summer and almost threw it out.
My wife was going through my old finds and said it feels heavy.
I double checked on my V3I and it says gold??? 34 VDI and the analyze screen comes up strongest on 22.5 Khz.
    Also nice camel hump.
Anybody have some sense what the insignia is?
It is about the size of a penny. It was on a cheap chain

Hmmm. It doesn't look the right color to be gold and looks to be plated. I can't really help on what it is but it doesn't look gold. Still a cool find and I would definitely keep it. HH

Could the chain have been from a pocket watch, or was it too light and cheap for that?

I don't think so as the chain was fairly small

Gabby lead will read very close to gold as will pewter could it be a type of "cast or pot " metal that was gold plated or guilted ?? solid gold wouldn't pit or flake and discolor like the picture shows.

I'm gonna take it to a goldsmith to have it checked out.
I do not think it is gold but one never knows????
I was thinking some sort of gold alloy, closer to white gold.
And then again it may be totally garbage.
The insignia has me perplexed and Google never came up with anything either.
I'm fairly certain I found it on a beach. This is part of metal detecting I enjoy the most.....

I agree Gabby trying to figure out just what we find is half the fun , please tell us what the goldsmith has to say about it .

I took the medallion to the goldsmith and he was pretty sure it is gold...about 10 grams.
He is going to do the acid test but was busy and he'll let me know today.
He thinks it was an amateur casting, based on what he saw under his microscope.
Glad i didn't pitch it. I guess I owe my wife a nice evening out on the town!!

The goldsmith confirmed that the medallion was 10k gold and weighed 10 gr.
I still have no idea what it represents but maybe google will spit out some ideas.???

It fooled me too as I almost threw it out. It just looked like some cheap kids jewelry from walmart.
I can't recall what the VDI was when I found it, cause it should have tipped me off back then.
The only thing it kind of resembles according to google is an ancient celtic coin, but that is unlikely especially here in Saskatchewan......But one never knows???
I'm sure glad my wife went through my finds.
