    Chiggers !!

I thought I hated deer ticks with a passion but after last week I think I hate chiggers even more. I was in central Texas last week for work and got my legs chewed up bad by chiggers. I guess they don’t really bite, but latch onto you with their mouths and inject fluids that dissolve your skin so they can feed on it. Vile little creatures. They are tiny, you can’t even feel them on you. You only notice several hours later when the itchy welts begin to form.

We don’t have them here up in New England thank goodness, but I feel bad for you southern and central folks if you have to deal with chiggers when you are out detecting. The bites are intensely itchy for a few days and they take up to 2 weeks to heel. They got all over my legs but they really went to town on the soft skin behind my knees. Their only saving grace is they don’t carry diseases.
    Nasty little varmints.

I remember as a kid trying to describe chiggers to my cousins in Michigan. These invisible bugs that would get you if you rolled around in the grass. They didn't believe me and thought I was telling them tall tales. Nail polish works after you've been bitten. If you don't want to get bitten at all, put a little sulphur around the top of your shoes.

I had a friend that had chiggers so bad he had to go to the emergency room for treatment. No chiggers or ticks in this area, thank goodness.
