Don't know if you knew, but 11 years after the large cent was discontinued a mint employee apparently found the die set and made about a dozen or so unofficial large cents with the 1868 date.

This is the perfect thread to post my dream finds. Still on my list are the following:

    Gold coin
    Flowing Hair coin
    Drapped Bust coin
    3 cent (silver or nickel)
    20 cent silver
    Shield Nickel
    1700's silver (Spanish or American)

That covers the big ones for me. With the permissions that I currently have I think I might be able to get a Shield Nick or maybe even a 3 center. So we will see...I can't complain if I never find any of these.
Detectors I use: Minelab Equinox 900 & Manticore
    Favorite finds I have made:
    1,000+ silver coins
92pcs of 1700's Trade Era Silver
    Copper Culture Indian Artifacts
125+ War of 1812 Era buttons and relics
    My wife
(probably should have started with that one)

One thing I have noticed doing research on certain coins is that having certain coins in your possession can be illegal and a Federal offense due to mint recalls or other monetary actions. One prime example is the 1973 Lincoln aluminum penny. Samples were made and many given out to government officials. But then the mint decided against issuing the coins and recalled them. Now there is only 1 left known to exist, though many are unaccounted for. The Fugio is another example, but old enough the government no longer worries about them.
