I Found 40% of Big Silver

I stopped on the way home from work yesterday to hunt one house before it got dark. I did almost the entire yard and just before I started heading back to the car, I got decent signal and dug a 1968 Kennedy Half. I thought at first that it was 64 because of how clean it came out. Then I realized that it was a 40% Silver Kennedy. Not bad for a 45 minute hunt.

Today I was able to get in one more house. I was able to hunt about an hour before it dark. The first coin I dug was a 1920 Merc. About 10 minutes later I dug another Merc, this time a 1943. As i was getting ready to call it a night, I got a high pitch 12-47. I dug the plug and out popped a "Forget Me-Not" Silver. I'm not sure if it's off a bracelet or ring or what. But it's Silver so I'll take it. I also dug 5 Wheats today.

Congrats on the silver! That 1920 Merc looks great for the year, most I have seen from that era are worn to the point of having a barely legible date or worse.

Nice, Don. A few years ago I didn't realize that the there were years where it was 40% silver. I thought it went straight to clad like the quarters and dimes did. That was until I received some from a collection. Good score seeing as they made these for less years than the Franklin Halves, which don't show too often.

Don, great finds! Let me tell you about the forget-me-not. It is a link from a bracelet. During WW2, sweetheart jewelry was quite a cottage industry. The flower depicted is a Forget me not. Soldiers gave these to their sweeties when they shipped out. Your link looks to be inscribed with a name. Are you able to read it? I found an entire bracelet with family names engraved on each link and 1944 on the last link. A great piece of American history for sure! Congrats and HH, Dave.

Thanks Dave, I had no idea what it was. I have to be honest, I didn't see the word scratched into it. It says "Birthday".
Thanks again for the history lesson. I'm sure it was important piece to someone years ago.
