    Last 2 hunts-getting better

    Hi all,
Well, as all the parks it seems the beaches and shallow water areas are all pretty much pounded heavily and often here. Very few finds to be had in most areas I hunted-not even trash!

Went for a short hunt Wed. morning. Only a penny and a dime, plus bonus coil of copper wire. Low tones sounded promising but turned out to be only the usual ring pulls.

This is from Friday morning. Again, the low tones were the wrong kind of rings. This time I did manage to snag 53 cents in coins and a hotwheels type tank body. The best was a surprise for sure. I picked this particular spot because there is a shipwreck in 30 feet of water just off the point, where it ran aground in 1902 and broke apart. So I had hopes I might get lucky and find something from the wreck. Right at the tip of the point where 2 currents meet and waves wash up a lot of stuff I found what I believe is a harmonica reed plate. There is no way to know where it came from, but it is possible it did come from the wreck. The build of it seems to coincide with the right period.

As may be seen here, the lake was a bit on the rough side again due to the weather fronts coming through. This kept me staying fairly shallow because of the occasional sets of 2 food waves. I still managed to get wet though!

Photos are from about 2/3 up the bluff above the lake. Not bad going down, but it's one heck of a climb back up-especially with icy steps, wet, carrying equipment, and wearing waders.

Thanks! Not easy in the water. Zero visibility, waves and currents moving me and everything else around, digging blindly with a long stick....I spent 30 minutes chasing a "quarter" that turned out to be the corroded top of an aluminum can!

It sounds a little tricky. I'm leaning towards a water machine for the spring. Thats why I've been following your progress , tips and learning experiences.

    I hate when that happens!

We went to Florida this past spring. I did some beach detecting for the first time there.
I'd get a screaming quarter / half dollar signal, dig to China just to find a beer can buried 2 feet deep.
    I feel your pain.
Good luck on your next go at it.

Harmonica reeds mean old coins! They sound so good at cellar holes.

Digger - I wonder how many people are swimming in Lake MI anymore in the MKE area. With all the WWTP issues and bacteria count so high, I would think people are swimming in different locations. Doesn't mean that there aren't things to be found though. I moved to MKE about 20 years ago and cannot remember a summer when it wasn't poo free. One of these days you will get something for your efforts!!

Thanks badger-it won't be for lack of effort I can assure you. But I think you are right that not too many people swim in the lake any more in the area. Too much algae (seaweed?) growth and that crap depositing on the beaches stinking them up, along with and piles of dead fish and tons of zebra mussel shells don't make for a good day at the beach. But this time of year there isn't much other opportunity to detect as everything else if frozen solid except for sections of the river. But that will be frozen soon too with temps now dropping to the negative numbers.
