    It definitely a trigger guard !!

    looks to be off one of the many types of "kentucky long rifle" muskets . similar to this one featured on this link

    Thanks Del, it was next to a big piece of iron which I didn't bother to dig. I'm going to go back and see if I can't find the receiver.
